Internal Pipework
An internal mains chlorination or disinfection is needed to ensure that systems are clean and safe for use prior to handover generally following a fit-out or refurbishment. This is particularly important where drinking water outlets are present.
Thorough flushing and disinfection is required when internal mains water pipework becomes contaminated. Contamination can be in the form of:
- bacteria
- debris
- dust
- scale
- general building debris
The recognised standard for this work: BS 8558 plus additional requirements of certain water authorities.
When to request an internal mains chlorination or disinfection
• in any new installations as part of a building’s commissioning procedure
• if contamination is suspected
• when the pipe work has not been flushed regularly
• where major extensions or alterations have been carried out to the water system
• where underground pipe work has been installed connecting to the mains supply
